    • "My Dear Niece,
      I should have answered your kind letter long ago but I wanted to give you the history of the first settling of the Ramsays on P. E. Island.
      In 1770 My grandfather John Ramsay with 6 sons and 2 nephews came to the Islant (from the Mull of Cantyre, Scotland) on the ship anna Bella. the ship was wrecked at Malpeque harbour.
      The names of the sons are John, Donald, Angus, Dugald, Malcolm (my father) and Archibald.
      The nephews are Edward and Malcolm.
      My brothers and sisters are Jennie, Nellie, John, Donald, Mary, Margaret, Archibald, Charles and myself, 8 died in infancy. I am the youngest of 16. On my mother's side, her father's name was Donald Murphy, he married a McQuaig. My mother's name was Mary. All were from Cantyre came out with the Ramsays. My sister Jennie was married to Mathew Stewart, had no family. Nellie married George Ellison her children were, George, Malcolm & Jane (twins), John, Flora, Archibald, Janet and Helen. George is now at the old homestead very poorly with palsy not able to wait on himself.
      John Ramsay married Coy McCoy family were Jennie, Isabel, Kate, Mary, John, Donald, Hugh and George.
      Donald married Betsy Green had one son Donald. Mary married William Hutchinson their family are Archibald, Donald, Robert, William, James, Lamuel, Emily.
      Your mother comes next. Archibald married Ellen Stewart their family are Malcolm, Barbara, Mary, Charlie, John, Ellen. Mlcolm lives in New Jersey, and John's son Hugh is there too, he is a shipbuilder.
      Charles maried Margaret Hunter. They had 16 in family, 8 died in infancy.
      For myself my wife's name is Ann Maefield our family are Mary Ann, William, Eleanor, Thomas, Eliza, Jane, Dan, Elizabeth,Flora and Harriet.
      This is about as near as I can tell you. If I have forgotten anything or you wish to ask anything just write me.
      James Hutchinson& wife wish to be remembered to you.
      We saw Kitty McFarlane not long ago, she was well and looking anxiously for a letter from you.
      We are having wet weather the farmers are having a hard time to get their grain harvested hundred of stooks are still in the field and the weather continues wet, potatoes are rotting in the ground.
      And now we write in sending love to you, husband and family, hoping to hear from you soon.
