| 5 | Notes from Bonnie Fincher Rodgers on picture of St. Mary Magdalene Church: From an original watercolour by Harry Pearman of Earls Common. Published and produced by RJL Smith and Associates Much Wenlock Shropshire. I, Bonnie Fincher Rodgers, was thrilled when I received this Christmas card from Eileen and Frank Fincher. I had corresponded with her before and she has sent documents and information on our family from there. Most of the Finchers from 1500 and 1600, until the mid 1700s are buried in this Church and Church Yard. Some were buried at St. Peters Church in Worcester. St. Peters no longer stands, but is now a parking lot. Our Francis the Elder was buried there. They are currently raising money to repair some of the timbers on the roof. I sat in this small, but beautiful, church and tried to imagine just what it like back when our Francis gave up his church and became a Quaker. In 1540, this church was known as "Lady Chapel". Shell Manor was purchased by the Fincher Family in 1549. The Fincher name was carried in Shell Manor until 1755, when Phillip Fincher died. It then passed to the female co-heir, Mary Hornblower. You will find all the details in "The Victoria History of the Counties of England WORCESTERSHIRE, published for the University of London Institute of Hisorical Research by Dawsons of Pall Mall. This book can be found in most Genealogial Research Libraries. The person in the photo is Bonnie Fincher Rodgers, who is the 10th generation of Fransis Fincher, the immigrant. Shell Monor, Shell Cottage, the Silver Chalice, St. Mary Magdalene Church are pictures shared by Bonnie and her husband, Buel, taken on their fall 1998 vacation to England. The picture of the Silver Chalice denotes a silver cup donated to the church by John Fincher, of Shell Manor in Himbleton, 1656. It was augmented (more metal added) and it was inscribed in 1688. She was born 31 July 1889 and died 16 October 1961 My Mother referred to her as Aunt Kate Davis - because she had another Aunt Kate on her Mother's side. She and her husband lived on Clinton Blvd. really close to Mynell's Gardens. As a little girl I did go there but don't really remember her. One of her nieces Eula Prichard Denson, daughter of James Miciah Denson (the youngest child of James William and Emma Pearson Denson was living with her in 1940 and I believe inherited her house when she died. I think she remained with her. Eula called my Mother quite frequently just to talk "family" I was a girl when all these people died and I really didn't pay a lot of attention. I know the Densons liked to name the children after sisters/brothers etc. My Great Uncle Jim Davis named his first child Jack Steele Davis after your family. Mammy (what we called my great grandmother) was very close to all her sisters and my Mother was very close to her. My Mother was her oldest grandchild. My great grandmother was William Gertrude the 2nd child born to the family. She died in 1953. She named her youngest child Prichard after the last name of Eula Viola's husband who was her older sister. hope some of this helps. I have lots of information gathered from lots of places. She married Miles Kimball Roberts on Jan. 7, 1954 in Loa, Utah. She was raised and educated in Glenwood and Richfield, Utah. She lived in Salina, Utah for 13 years; Loa, Utah for four years and in the Ogden area for the past 40 years. She was a member of the Ogden 3rd LDS Ward. She had served as a Visiting Teacher for many years. Mrs. Roberts was a key punch operator at I.R.S. and Hill Air Force Base. She enjoyed gardening. She was a mother and grandmother of unselfish love, always willing to give and help her family and others. Surviving are her husband of Ogden; six sons and six daughters, ....; 54 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers and four sisters ...... Page 178: CANTRALL.--The origin of the family in America was with ZebulonCantrall, who came from Wales, and settled in Philadelphia, Penn.,about the year 1700. There is a tradition in the family that be builtthe first brick house ever erected in that city. Zebulon Cantrall hada son, Joseph. He had a son, Joshua, who was born August 8, 1748,either in Pennsylvania or Virginia, most probably the latter. He was asoldier in the war for American Independence. This Joshua Cantrallmarried and had nine sons, but no daughter. Four of his sons diedwithout families. Of the other five, Joshua, born in Virginia, raiseda family, and died August 11, 1840, in DeWitt county, Ill. The otherfour, Zebulon G., William G., Levi and Wyatt, are the subjects of thefollowing sketches. Page 179: CANTRALL, ZEBULON G. was born June 29, 1773, in Botetourt county,Virginia. He was a brother of Joshua, William G., Levi and Wyatt. Thefamily moved in 1789, to Bath county, Ky. Zebulon G. was marriedthere, August 31, 1797, to Sarah McCallum. They moved to Clarkecounty, Ohio, from there to Sangamon county, Ill., arriving in thefall of 1833. In the spring of 1834 they moved to DeWitt county, Ill.They had fourteen children; two died young. Of the twelve-- ANN, born August 31, 1798, in Bath county, Ky., married John Branson.See his name. She died May 16, 1822. WYATT, born May 11, 1821, in Ohio, married Louisa Stevens. She died,and he married Mary A. Day. He died Jan. 7, 1875, leaving a widow nearLane, Franklin county, Kansas. WILLIAM L., born May 15, 1823, in Ohio, was married Oct. 26, 1843, toMelinda Stout. They had eight children. ANN, born in 1844, was marriedin DeWitt county to Joel Hopesberger. Mrs. Melinda Cantrall died March 10,1864, and W. L. Cantrall was married in 1865 to Christine Everly, andlives near Chesnut, Logan county, Ill. Mrs. Sarah Cantrall died May 26, 1843, and Zebulon G. Cantrall diedSept. 11, 1845, both in DeWitt county, near Waynesville. Page 180: CANTRALL, WM. G., was born Sept. 6, 1784, in Botetourt, Va. Hisparents moved to Bath county, Ky., in 1789. He was there married, in1804, to Deborah Mitts, who was born Nov. 16, 1785, in Virginia. Soonafter marriage they moved from Bath county to the vicinity of NewLondon, Huron county, O., and then moved to Pickaway county. They hadten children in Ohio, and the family moved to Sangamon county, Ill.,arriving Nov. 1, 1824, in what is now Fancy creek township, on whatwas then called Higgins creek, but now called Cantrall's creek. Twochildren were born in Sangamon county. Of all their children-- DOROTHY, born March 15, 1805, in Ohio, married in Sangamon county toCharles Snelson. They had seven children, moved to DesMoines county,near Burlington, Iowa, where Mrs. Snelson died. The family live there. ANN, born Aug. 1, 1806, in Ohio, married in Sangamon county to John W.Snelson. They had eight children, and moved to Keokuk county, Iowa,where Mrs. Snelson died. The family live there. Inf.; was commissioned as Captain at the organization of theregiment. His health failing, he resigned in May, 1863, and lives inSalisbury township. Joshua M. Cantrall resides in Fancy creektownship, eight miles north of Springfield. THIRZA, or THERESA, born Nov. 8, 1812, in Ohio, married in Sangamoncounty, to Edward Guyott. She died Oct. 7, 1851, three months aftermarriage. He married again, and lives in Springfield. ADAM M., born Feb. 27, 1815, in Ohio, married in Sangamon county toDelilah Smith. They had nine children. JEREMIAH married Etta Drone,and live in Fancy creek township. HARRIET married Wm. Brisentine;moved to Dallas county, Texas, in 1853. She died there, leaving onechild. WM. L. BRISENTINE lives with his granduncle, Joshua M.Cantrall. See his name. Adam Cantrall and his wife live at Riverton. DEBORAH, born Feb. 16, 1817, in Ohio, married in Sangamon county toMarshal S. Randall. They have twelve children, and reside near BlueMound, Christian county. Their daughter, Mary J., married Wm. G.Cantrall, Jun. See his name. He was commissioned 2d Lieut. at the organization,promoted to Captain, and served as such to the end of the rebellion,and was honorably discharged. He moved with nis family to Black Bob,Johnson county, Kansas. MACDONALD, born April 5, 1833, in Sangamon county, married NarcissaHedrick. They had one child, and Mr. Crantrall died Sept. 15, 1872.His widow and son, CHARLES, reside in Menard county, five milesnortheast of Cantrall. Mrs. Fanny Cantrall died Sept. 10, 1835, and Levi Cantrall married May27, 1836, to Mrs. Ann Barnett, whose maiden name was Patterson. Theyhad five children, three of whom died in infancy. Of the other two-- FANNY L., born Oct. 9, 1838, in Sangamon county, married Jan., 1857,to Henry Graham. They have four living children, MARY A., WILLIAM,ARMINDA D. and JOSEPH, and reside near Athens, Menard county. JOSEPH S., born Oct. 16, 1841, in Sangamon county, married Jan. 14,1869, to Margaret A. Canterbury. They have one child, DAISY E., andreside at Cantrall. He is one of the proprietors of the new town ofCantrall. Levi Cantrall died Feb. 22, 1860, and his widow resides with their sonJoseph S., at Cantrall. The town of Cantrall was laid out on land heentered soon after coming to the country, and was named in honor ofhis memory. INCIDENTS. From a statement in writing made by Levi Cantrall a few months beforehis death, I learn that in building the cabin he commenced Dec. 8th,1819, about half a mile west of the present town of Cantrall, themortar froze so that he could not plaster it. December 24, 1819, snowbegan to fall, and continued one snow after another until it was twofeet deep on a level. The weather continued intensely cold, and acompany of seven men started to the American Bottom for provisions.They were Levi and Wyatt Cantrall, Alexander and Henry Crawford, M.Holland, a Mr. Kellogg and John Dixon, who afterwards founded the cityof Dixon, Ill. They loaded their wagons with flour and meal andstarted home on the eighteenth, and on the twentieth rain commencedfalling. The rain and melting snow set the whole country afloat, andwhen they reached the Sangamon river it was too full to cross. Theysent back to Kelly's--where Springfield now stands--for tools, andobtained an axe and grubbing hoe. With these they made a canoe, andreached home twenty-one days from the time of starting. On the 6th ofMay, 1820, the frost killed their growing corn. The settlers thoughtof moving back south, but they hauled up provisions before the nextwinter and lived through it. Levi Cantrall built a horse mill in the fall of 1820. It was a bandmill, with a wheel forty feet in diameter. It was the first mill everbuilt north of the Sangamon river, and people came thirty miles ormore to mill. Mr. Cantrall built a water mill on Cantrall's creek,near the present town of Cantrall. It did sawing and grinding. He saysthe snow of 1830-31 was four feet on a level. Levi Cantrall kept atannery where he lived for more than forty years. He was marriedin Bath county to Sally England, and moved to Clarke county, O., wherethey had three children, and then moved, in company with Mrs.Cantrall's father, Stephen England, to St. Clair county, Ill., in thefall of 1818, and in the spring of 1819 to what is now Fancy Creektownship, in Sangamon county, where they had six children. Of theirnine children-- ELIZA, born Sept. 8, 1813, in Ohio, married in Sangamon county to JohnMcLemore. He died in 1871, leaving a widow and two children atStirling, Whiteside county. SAMUEL D., born Feb. 9, 1816, in Clarke county, O., married inSangamon county, March 6, 1837, to Sarah S. Alexander. They had sixliving children. ALBERT A. married March 6, 1862, to Martha Hunt. Heenlisted in Aug., 1862, in Co. C, 114 Ill. Inf., for three years, andwas appointed Sergeant. He was captured at the battle of Guntown,Miss., in June, 1864, and was placed in the Andersonville prison pen,where he remained about five months, and after that was taken from oneprison to another to prevent being released by the Union forces, andwas paroled March 1, 1865, and died of starvation and exposure March5, 1865, at Wilmington, N. The portion of Sangamon County he was born in wasafterward made Menard County. He remained at home until 1858, in whichyear he settled in Nemaha County, Neb. He engaged in the practice ofhis profession in Peru, Nemaha County, about three years, then engagedin farming until he moved to Nebraska City in 1877. He was married inMenard County, August 19, 1847, to Miss Elizabeth Watkins of thatcounty. The Watkins were old residents of that section. She died,leaving six children--Robert M., George, Mary F., William M., HenryL., Ann S. He was married to his present wife in Nemaha County, Neb.,April 31, 1871. She was Miss Angelina G. Registered, (signed) Benjamin Homans Secretary to the Board of Commissioners of the Navy Pension Fund Andrew Rasmussen settled in the year 1805 on Lot #1, in the hamlet ofNorth Sterling, Cayuga, New York State. He had lived in Ontario County, New York prior to moving to Cayuga. Andrew Rasmussen wasfatally shot at the Battle of Four Mile Creek at 15 minutes past 6p.m. on 22 July 1813. According toArthur, Samuel Clary moved eventually to San Francisco (after 1910),where he died in 1927. Arthur said officials from San Franciscocontacted him in 1927, told him that Samuel had died, whereupon Arthurprovided some money for a burial.
