JANE BROOKS STEELE; FINALLY RESTING IN PEACE.

Jane Isabel Brooks Steele was finally laid to rest Saturday, almostl00
years after she died at the old homestead up Parachute Creek.

Mrs. Steele died sometime around l890 (determined later l891) and her
grave had remained on a corner of the l60 acre Steele homestead forthe
past 95 years or so years.

But along came modern technology and with it, the Chevron Oil ShaleCo.
now Chevron, wants to build a pipeline near the Steele grave.

"It boiled down to a choice of leaving the grave in an industrialarea, or
moving it" said Doug Fassbinder, grandson of Mrs. Steele's l2thyoungest
child. Fassbinder raised his eyes from the newly-engraved tombstoneat
the Battlement Mesa Cemetery and peered across the Grand Valley toward
Parachute Creek. "So that's why we're here"

They assembled last Saturdy, almost 40 of the Steele ancestors, andpaid
their respects to what they hope will be the final resting place ofJane
      Isable Brooks Steele.

It was neither a solemn nor joyous occasion.

Portions of the gathering amost resembled a family reunion with clan
members embracing others whom they hadn't seen for years. Many of the
family , still living in Colorado ,had never met each other.

Nobody got dressed up very much and somebody chuckled when a Steele
ancestor asked what had happened to the old tombstone, and the answerwas

"I don't know, you'll have to ask that crazy Aunt Edith of yours."

But when the funeral service began, the cemetery became quiet exceptfor
the gusting winds that blew dust into the sunny sky" I'm a littleashamed
that almost all of us live here in Colorado and don't know each
other."began Jesse Steele, dressed in cowboy hat, white shirt andbaggy,
gray pin-striped trousers. "but I'm glad to be a part of this and I'mglad
to be a descendant of Isabel Jane Brooks."

The clicking of camera shutters broke the silence.

"I guess back in the days of Grandma Brooks, " Jesse Steele continued."we
all would have just hitched up a team and wagon and gone and visitedeach
other. Now we hardly see each other.

Steele talked for awhile about the kind of woman that Jane IsableBrooks
Steele was - hard working, kind and softspoken - and then RobertSteele,
one of Jane's grandsons who lives in Rangely, dedicated the grave witha
      short, quiet prayer.

The mood lightened a little after that, and the assembled mediaattending
the ceremony - including almost a dozen photographers, reporters and
television camermen - drifted through the crowd to take pictures andfind
people who would talk about Grandma Brooks.

She was really a super person" Fassbinder told one reporter "she hadl2
kids, and she would fix individual meals for each one of them if they
wanted. Nobody ever had a bad word to say aobut her"

Fassbinder said Mrs. Steele and her husband, Fielding Steele, moved tothe
Piceance Basin area after the Civil War. She died either in l887 orl89l
(l89l), depending on which side of the family is relating the story, and
she was buried under a sandstone tombstone about seven miles north of
where the Town of Parachute is now located. The sandstone gravestone
gradually weathered away, and it was replaced with granite in thel950's.

Chevron contacted Fassbinder in March and discussed moving the grave. The
company offered to pay all expenses.

"I really felt negative at first," Fassbinder said, "but we didn'twant
her resting in the middle of a refinery" Some family members stillfeel
      negative.

"Some of us were pretty ticked-off and bitter about it, " said Lee
Wilkerson, a son-in-law of one of Mrs. Steele's granddaughters.

As the gathering dispersed, Robert Steele turned and took another lookat
the flower-covered grave site after the wind and dust died down for afew
      seconds.

"I guess I have mixed emotions about it,m "Steele said. "She'd been
resting there for a long time. Maybe she should've stayed there"...
