Mrs. J.A. George, Loved Pioneer, Called to Rest

Funeral Services Held Tuesday From the Welch & Medlin Chapel in DosPalos

Surrounded by her loved ones and those who knew her most intimately inlife, the body of Mrs. Phoebe George, 77, wife of John George of thiscity, who died Saturday evening at the family home in Dos Palos ofheart trouble, was tenderly laid in rest in Dos Palos cemetery Tuesdaymorning.
Within the chapel of the Welch & Medlin funeral parlors, lastrites were held over the body at 10 a.m., with Rev. W.J. Lee, localMethodist pastor officiating. A trio of ladies, Mesdames Gaerte, Neeseand Mass, with Mrs. F.L. Gibbs as piano accompanist, sang thecomforting hymns beloved by the deceased.
Long time friends of the family carried the bier to its lastresting place. They were Messrs. Onie John, Richard Mason, HarryGreen, William Moore, Glen Kinney and Wm. Mumby.
It was back in 1892, forty years ago, that Mr. and Mrs. JohnGeorge, with their four children moved to Dos Palos-then only a name, with but eight or ten families residing in the entire community.Descendents of those early settlers were at the funeral of their oldneighbor Tuesday in the persons of Fred Hadley, Mesdames Laura Bliss,Louella Bowen and others.
The deceased was born in Salem, Ohio, May 12, 1855. She wasmarried at the age of 16, and with her husband moved to Iowa, wherethey resided until coming to Dos Palos in 1892. Four children wereborn to the union and all are living. They are Mrs. Mary Irland, RedTop, Minnesota; Mrs. Edith Downs, Portland, Oregon; Andrew J. Georgeof Dos Palos, and Warren E. George of Los Banos. Besides these, Mrs.George is survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren. All of the children except Mrs. Irland were present at the funeral. Agrandson, Lawrence George, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew George, wholives at Madera, was also present.
The aged couple resided on their original farmstead, on the edgeof the town for the entire time they lived in California, until eightmonths ago, when they moved to Dos Palos. The husband, who will reachhis 81st birthday in November, next, will probably make his home withhis son, Andrew, at the latter's farm adjoining the old homesteat.
Great banks of flowers attested the love and esteem in which thedeceased was held in the community where she labored so long.
The Star joins with the large circle of friends in extending itssincere sympathy to the bereaved family.
