56 | From: Early Virginia Immigrants; 1623–1666 C Clary, Tho., 1642, byJohn King, Charles River Co. From: Early Virginia Immigrants; 1623–1666 C Clarye, Tho., 1653, byJohn Day, Gloucester Co. The information below is taken from Part IV Other Clarys of EarlyAmerica; Chapter XIII, pg 500, Clary of Virginia. A Thomas Clary is mentioned on 32 pages throughout the book. Thomas Clarye b. ca 1630; resided in Surry Co., VA 1679; m by 1660Judith (Laton?) in VA. Children born in VA: Thomas Clary, Jr ca 1662; William Clary, b ca 1665; Ann R. W. Clary b ca 1667, m. RobertLancaster (they had a child, Judith Lancaster who m. ? Pitt) Thomas Clarye reached the shores of Virginia by 19 October 1663, whenJohn Day was granted 450 acres in Gloucester Co for having "transported" himself and eight others to the Virginia colony. One ofthe eight was Thomas Clarye. Did Judith Laton, another member of that group, later marry Thomas Clarye? By 1660 he had a wife Judith. Thomas' name "Clarye" in printed records, may have been "Clary,"written with a little flourish at the end that has been interpreted as an "e." Some scribes ended nearly every name with such flourish. A Thomas Clary had arrived in Virginia about eleven years earlier in agroup transported by John King, for which King on 10 December 1642 wasgranted 300 acres on the south side of the Charles River (YorkCounty). York County is across the York River from Gloucester County, and not far from Surry County, where Thomas Clarye settled. The twoThomases may or may not have been the same person; he may havereturned to Europe and then come back to Virginia in 1653. We have noinformation about a Thomas Clary during that 11 year interval. Thomas probably paid for his passage by working as an "indenturedservant." This system, in wide use at that time, permitted a person of limited means to cross the Atlantic and pay later, usually by fourto seven years of work. Thomas and Judith Clarye in September 1660 bought 300 acres in LowerChippoakes, Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry County. He was a cooper, makingand repairing barrels and casks. Between 1660 and 1679 he witnessedseveral Surry County deeds, twice served on juries which "viewed acorpse and determined cause of death," and was a tithable (taxable)resident of Surry County in 1668. No will has been found for Thomas Clarye. He is assumed to have beenthe father of Thomas and William of Surry County, because he is theonly Clary man found earlier than Thomas and William in Surry Countyrecords. Further evidence of the relationship appears in the name ofThomas, and the name of Ann Clary Lancaster's daughter Judith--namedfor her grandmother Judith Clarye. | CLARY, Thomas (I3450)

60 | History of Columbiana County, Ohio; St. Clair.; page 229; copyprovided by Betty Wooten. Original possessed by Mrs. Carrie Keylor;120 E. Friend St., Columbiana, Ohio 44408 In 1797, John Totten settled in what is now Liverpool, where also inthe same year Isaac Matson located, upon section 32. Closely following them, James Caruthers settled upon section 28,where James McCoy now has a farm, and John George, with his two sons -William and Thomas, - upon the "Buck Flats." Here they cleared andimproved a considerable tract of land, but failed to enter it at theland-office at once, thinking there would be ample time to do thatafter they had got matters into good shape. Their delay proved fatalto their interests, however, since a designing person, noting theirfailure and thinking to profit by the neglect, entered the land anddispossessed the Georges of the fruits of their arduous toil. It was a bitter pill, and they protested vehemently against theoutrage, but there was no redress. Pretty well discouraged, butresolved to push ahead once more, they took up the northwest quarterof section 29, now occupied by L. Ross, and having learned wisdom, duly entered it. | GEORGE, John (I3666)

72 | Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Volume 21, Family ofJohn Billington; Originally compiled by Harriet W. Hodge, Revised byRobert S. Wakefield, FASG; Published by General Society of MayflowerDescendants; Plymouth, MA; 2001. "Francis Billington lived at Plymouth until 1669 when he moved toMiddleboro and occupied land granted to him as one of the "FirstComers." He lived there until his death, except for a few years duringKing Philip's War when he fled to Plymouth for safety. On 18 April1642 his daughter Elizabeth was apprenticed; and 14 January 1642/3 hebound out son Joseph, "aged vi or vii" and two daughters, probablyMartha and Mary, one five years old and the other even younger.[William] Bradford stated in 1651 that Francis Billington had eightchildren. On 2 March 1642 Francis Billington of New Plymouth, planter, sold toMr. John Atwood of Plymouth, land in Plymouth. In his old age Francis Billington was dependent on his son Isaac forsupport and died intestate. No probate record appears, although sonIsaac petitioned the probate court in 1703/4 for title to all hisfather's Middleboro lands, stating he had had sole care of his parentsin their old age. A Plymouth County Court Case of Sept. 1722, broughtby Isaac's daughter Desire^4 (Billington) Bonney and her husband,James, shows that Francis Billington died intestate leaving issue twosons and five daughters, viz: sons Josephy (eldest, who inherited adouble portion) and Isaac; daughters Elizabeth, Mary Dorcas, Mercy andMartha, with a total of eight shares in the estate. A 3 Dec. 1710quitclaim deed from Francis's father Francis and grandfather (unnamed)Billington ([Mayflower] Family #12) , reading "my father Francis andgrandfather (unamed) Billington" seems to imply a son Francis, Jr. Butin the absence of any mention of such a son in contemporaneousPlymouth records, coupled with the fact that Francis's^4 deedevidently transferred shares of Joseph Billington, we conclude thatthe deed contains a clerical error. The original must have read "myfather Joseph and grandfather Francis Billington." Indications arethat the seven children named in the Bonney suit and their progenywere the only survivors of Francis^2 Billington. A more detailedaccount has been published. | BILLINGTON, Francis (I2807)

97 | Samuel Fremont Clary (updated 9-28-02) Samuel Clary was born August 6, 1853, in Peru, Miami County, Indiana. His father and mother were Hiram Clary, a cabinetmaker, and ElizabethBaker. According to the Federal Census of 1860, the family was living inPeru, Indiana, and Sam's mother had passed away, though Hiram had, bythen, remarried. Hiram's new wife was Mary Ann Long, whom he marriedSeptember 15, 1857 (Miami County, Indiana; Index to Marriage Record1850-1920 Inclusive Volume I Letters A - L, Inclusive). Thus, it seemsentirely probable that Samuel had little recollection of his birthmother. Samuel had five older siblings living at home in 1860: NancyJane (25); Mary E. (23); Tipton D. (21); William (12); and Thomas(10). Samuel was then 6 years old. Of note, the family enumerated justbelow the Hiram Clary family on the 1860 Census included a head ofhousehold who was a telegrapher. Samuel Clary would later become atelegraph operator. Little more is known about Samuel Clary until his marriage to Bell E.Beard, daughter of Joseph A. Beard and Elizabeth Richardson, May 9,1875 (Marriage License; Auburn, Nemaha County, Nebraska). According tothe Federal Census of 1880, Samuel and Bell moved to MarshallTownship, Saline County Missouri, where the couple parented MyrtleClary (1878) and Claude Samuel Clary (July 26, 1880). The couple hadone additional child, Joseph H. Clary, who was born February 22, 1882,in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico (Joseph Harum ClarySocial Security Application of February 25, 1937). It is believed thatthe family was then residing in Grant's Station, New Mexico; moreover, family lore indicates that Bell Beard died at or soon after Joseph'sbirth. As of this writing, Bell's burial location is unknown. At somepoint before 1884, Samuel conveyed the three children to the home oftheir maternal grandparents, where they were raised to maturity. Theirfurther contact with Samuel between 1884 and 1910 is unknown. By 1884, Samuel Clary remarried to a lady with the last name ofHawley. Additional information about Samuel's second wife remainsunknown. Four children issued from this union (California DeathIndex). They were: Arthur E. (born April 18, 1884, in Kansas); EstellaGertrude (born June 16, 1887, in Nebraska); Ethel M. (born August 20,1888, in Kansas); and Merl Everett (born April 3, 1896, in Colorado). Samuel's circumstances between 1896 and 1900 are unknown; though byJuly 2, 1900, Samuel is enumerated on the Federal Census for HighlandPrecinct (near Boise), Ada County, Idaho. By then, he was 46 years oldand listed as a "lodger." He reported his occupation as TelegraphOperator, but also indicated that he had been unemployed for fivemonths. His marital status was shown as Single; though additionalinformation suggests that Samuel's second wife had died by 1900. Nothing about Samuel Clary is again seen until the Federal Census of1910 for Peru, Nemaha County, Nebraska; whereupon Samuel is livingwith his eldest son, Claude Clary. Samuel's occupation is given asLaborer, Farming; and his marital status is given as Widower. No additional information of Samuel Clary appears until his death onFebruary 11, 1920 (Certificate of Death from City and County of SanFrancisco; Local Registered No. 1292). At the time of his death,Samuel was living at the Relief Home for the Aged and Infirm, in SanFrancisco, where, according to the Death Certificate, Samuel hadresided for seven years. His occupation was given as Cook; and hismarital status is shown as Widower. The cause of death was "LabarPneumonia" and Chronic Myocarditis. The certificate lists Samuel'sburial place as Cypress Lawn Cemetery, 835 Valencia St.; though thisremains unconfirmed. It should be noted that personal conversations between Claude S.Clary's son, Claud Clary, and Arthur Clary (circa 1952) reflect thatSamuel Clary may have been a chronic alcoholic. This information islargely anecdotal; though Samuel's frequent moves and animosityreflected by his sons do beckon this conclusion. ***** Marriage License; County Clerk; County Courthouse, Auburn, Nebraska.
